GMC Sierra 3500HD Beats Ford Super Duty F-350 in Testing for Columbia SC Drivers

2012 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty Columbia SC

The GMC Sierra Heavy Duty beat the Ford F-350 Super Duty in a test. just held a new set of tests comparing the Ram 3500, Ford Super Duty F-350, and GMC Sierra 3500HD in a grueling set of tests they called the Heavy Duty Hurt Locker.  The three trucks were put to the test under grueling towing loads of 19,400 pounds that put them within 90% of their gross combined weight limits–loads so high that the testers had to get commercial driver’s licenses in order to drive the trucks legally.  During hill-climb tests up some of the most grueling routes in the western United States including the Eisenhower Pass and Davis Dam route that will be used in 2013 to establish uniform tow ratings across brands, the testers decided to pile five adults into the trucks–putting the Sierra 3500HD’s gross combined weight to 28,600 pounds, or 98% of what the truck is rated for.

Just as important as towing prowess is the ability to slow the truck down safely when going downhill.  GMC Sierra offers an advanced Duramax 6.6L diesel engine paired with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission.  In testing the new-for-2011 exhaust brake, the testers found it to pair exceptionally well with the transmission to shift down and slow the truck when going down steep grades and only had to intervene with their feet five times during their standardized test.  By comparison, they found the Ford F-350′s exhaust brake to be “weak” and inspired “that ‘white knuckle’ feeling you don’t want while barreling down I-70 at night.” The Ford Super Duty required a whopping 13 applications of the service brake to slow it down over the same route, which caused the brakes to get exceptionally hot to the point of smoking by the end of every descent.

In the end, crowned Sierra HD the winner, saying “The Sierra was the most comfortable rig over our long days. It was also the quickest for the driver to get comfortable with the trailer and load.”

No Horsing Around: 2012 GMC Sierra HD in Columbia SC Popular Among Equestrians

GMC Sierra Denali HD Columbia SC

The GMC Sierra HD offers exceptional trailering capacity in all conditions.

Every year, Jennifer Thompson, an equine veterinarian, takes her passion for horses on the road to compete in horse-and-carriage driving events throughout the eastern half of the United States. She relies her GMC Sierra HD and its impressive towing and trailering capabilities.

“I really appreciate my truck’s power when merging onto the interstate and towing over mountains,” said Thompson, who drives a Sierra 2500HD with Duramax 6.6L turbo diesel V-8 and tows a 36-foot, gooseneck-hitch horse trailer. “I also appreciate the engine’s ability to hold the trailer back when going downhill so that I don’t need to ride the brakes.”

Sierra HD features a “smart” exhaust brake, one of the advantages available on GMC heavy duty trucks which offer a segment-leading fifth-wheel trailer weight rating of 21,700 pounds (single rear-wheel models only) and best-in-class weight carrying hitch capability. Even better, 2011 Sierra HD’s equipped with the Duramax diesel engine offer 11% better highway fuel economy than previous models and a larger 36-gallon fuel tank – both of which help to extend the GMC Sierra 2500 in Columbia SC‘s highway range to an estimated 680 miles.

“On one trip we were driving over the mountains of Pennsylvania, trailering three horses and 10-days’ worth of feed, hay and luggage weighing a total 15,500 pounds, and the Sierra never even burped,” Thompson said. “My fellow driver, who owns a Ford F-250, was really jealous.”

The “smart” exhaust brake is standard on 2011 Duramax-equipped Sierra HDs. This driver-selectable feature, which also integrates with the cruise control system, uses the the variable-geometry turbocharger and the compression of the engine to generate backpressure depending on the truck’s loading and the grade of the road, which slows down the 2012 GMC Sierra HD without applying the conventional brakes to prolong their life and prevent overheating on longer stretches going downhill.

Sierra HD’s trailer sway control system provides an added measure of towing confidence. The system senses conditions of lateral movement and intervenes with braking and/or reduced engine power to bring the trailer under control and keep it on its intended path. The system uses electric trailer brakes when a trailer is plugged into the standard wiring harness of the truck. The driver doesn’t have to do anything.

Sierra Heavy Duty’s hill start assist system also provides peace of mind by automatically engaging when sensors detect the vehicle is on a grade of about 5 percent or greater. It holds the brakes for about 1.5 seconds or until the gas pedal is pressed, preventing everything from rolling backwards. It is particularly effective when towing, giving the driver time to switch from the brake pedal to the gas pedal.

An available Rearview Camera System on the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD makes aligning the truck’s hitch with the trailer easy by projecting images onto the rearview mirror display or onto the optional in-dash navigation screen. This also makes it easier to maneuver while backing into loading areas.

These and other safety features and functional technologies undergo thousands and thousands of miles of real-world testing before going into production.

“For towing capability we test our vehicles under maximum load conditions and under extreme conditions, like Death Valley when it’s 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and up and down long, steep grades like Interstate 70 in Colorado up the Eisenhower Pass,” said Jim Mikulec, lead development engineer for heavy duty trucks. “We go to extremes so that our customers can tow with confidence, even on snow and ice.”

According to customer survey data, over 90% of Sierra HD owners use their trucks to tow. While trailer weight rating is the top purchase consideration, vehicle comfort also ranks as a high priority.

“My truck has all the creature comforts a person could want in a vehicle. The seats are comfortable and the layout of the cab keeps everything you need within reach,” said Tracy Bright of Ohio. The Sierra 3500HD owner competes in dressage, an arena event in which horse and rider execute a standardized series of movements. “There is no other vehicle I would consider for my trailering needs.”

Bright relies on the 3500HD’s Duramax turbo-diesel engine to haul her horses, Dusty El Niño and Diva Modena. The new 6.6L Duramax engine and other enhancements, including a new power steering pump, contribute to the truck interior’s exceptional quietness.

“I love how quiet my truck is, and I hate pulling up next to a noisy other brand of diesel truck and not being able to hear myself think,” Bright said. “I like to hear what is going on behind me. After all, my pride and joys are along for the ride.”

GMC Sierra All-Terrain HD Concept Unveiled for Columbia Drivers

The 2011 GMC Sierra All-Terrain HD concept to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show next month.

Jim Hudson GMC, the oldest Columbia GMC dealer, is proud to announce the unveiling of the GMC Sierra All-Terrain HD concept pickup truck.  Unveiled on GMC’s media web site, the Sierra will be on display next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The Sierra All-Terrain HD is based on the new 2011 GMC Sierra 2500HD for sale in Columbia, South Carolina, sharing the production 6.6L Duramax diesel V8 engine mated to a six-speed Allison 1000 transmission.  This Duramax engine is 11% more fuel-efficient than the outgoing engine used in the 2010 Sierra heavy duty trucks and reduces NOx emissions by 63%.  Rated at 397 horsepower and a monstrous 765 pound-feet of torque, the engine also features exhaust braking to save the brakes from excess wear on downhill grades, a feature also available on the production Sierra 2500HD.

The standard bed was jettisoned for a 5’8″ long bed, closer to the size found on a light duty GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab.  Opting for this bed pushes the wheels out toward the corners for improved approach and departure angles.  Sporting a composite bedliner designed in the style of a circuit board, the bed features locking storage in the side rails, LED flood lighting inside the bed, and connectivity including an onboard air compressor and a 110V household-style power outlet.  Access to the bed is improved by motorized power-retractable assist steps on the side of the bed.

Off-road prowess abounds in the Sierra All-Terrain HD, with the track widened to 73 inches for stability and the entire truck raised for three extra inches of ground clearance. 20-inch machined aluminum wheels are wrapped in 35-inch BFGoodrich KM2 mud-terrain tires for grip in practically anything, while specially-built Fox off-road shocks featuring remote reservoirs integrated in the wheel house liners help to keep the suspension in check alongside front and rear jounce shocks.  For extra protection, a composite underbody structure keeps the Sierra All-Terrain HD from taking the terrain with it.  The driver can press a single button to disconnect the front stabilizer bar, allowing more suspension travel while on rocky terrain.

The interior matches the exterior aesthetic, with premium appointments and increased functionality, including enhanced lighting. It conveys solidity and precision, blending accent details such as stainless steel mesh and satin chrome with an amplified expression of the All Terrain’s premium features. Two-tone dark gray leather seats, matched with embossed carbon fiber-style leather on the seating surfaces, have red contrast stitching.   Additional leather-wrapped interior features include the steering wheel, instrument panel and center console.

A new navigation radio is also featured on the Sierra All Terrain HD concept and previews future radios to be offered in GMC vehicles. An integrated 80-gig hard drive contains map data for the navigation system. It eliminates the need for a map disc and provides greater storage of music from portable devices. It also features DVR-style “time lapse playback,” which allows up to 20 minutes of recording/playback from the AM/FM/XM radio stations.
